Today, although racial inequalities in education have lessened considerably thanks to landmark historic events like the civil rights movement, school desegregation and the War on Poverty, the achievement gaps between more affluent and less privileged children have actually grown wider than ever according to Sean F. Reardon, Professor of Education and Sociology at Stanford University. Racial inequalities are no longer the main barrier. The greatest threat to achieving the American dream is economic class. A new book entitled “Too Many Children Left Behind” outlines the history of educational inequalities in America’s children, from kindergarten through eighth grade. Their story goes sour very early, and it gets worse as it goes along.
